Abstract | English as an International Language (EIL) scholarship accepts and values the plurality of English and rejects the idea of a single variety of English. In many school contexts today, however, there is little trace of EIL research. Rather, there, standard British English or American English rules, and any discussion of language variation is brief and focused on the orthographical, lexical, and phonological levels. Pragmatic variation across regional varieties (e.g., pluricentric languages, sub-regional variation) is not considered; neither is pragmatic variation across social factors (e.g., age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnic identity). The present book chapter draws on recent research from Variational Pragmatics and World Englishes focusing on regional and social pragmatic variation across the Englishes to demonstrate the ubiquity of such pragmatic variation across varieties. An empirical study focusing on pragmatic variation in responses to expressing thanks in the varieties of Canadian English and English illustrates the nature of regional and social pragmatic variation. On this basis, the paper examines the place of pragmatic variation in current conceptualizations of pragmatic competence and explores the implications of the existence of regional and social pragmatic variation for conceptualizations of pragmatic competence and for the teaching of pragmatic competence in the EIL language classroom. |
