Beschreibung des DatensatzesThe Eco-challenge dataset offers a comprehensive collection of student participation conducted as part of the Going Green - Education for Sustainability course. The dataset focuses on the analysis of how various module topics, such as "Green Energy", "Plastic Recycle" and "Toxic Fashion", impact students' local communities, including their towns, cities, neighborhoods, families, friends and schools and covers student contributions to different eco-challenges provided within the course curriculum over a span of nine years, from the school year 2014 to 2023. Students engaged in a wide range of activities, including experiments, interviews, questionnaire surveys, photography, and video recording, to examine and understand the implications of these topics on their immediate surroundings. The primary formats of student contributions include presentations, videos, songs, and posters. Each participation entry in the dataset is accompanied by an abstract text providing an overview of the project's objectives, as well as a detailed description of the implementation process. The dataset serves as a valuable resource for researchers and sustainability practitioners interested in studying and promoting environmental consciousness and community engagement within educational settings.

ForschungsdesignGoing Green is a Moodle-based blended learning project for secondary English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) and content-and-language-integrated-learning (CLIL) classrooms in the United States and Germany. It intends to engage and connect German and U.S. learners in exploring environmental challenges and policies in their countries, and collaboratively develop and implement local action plans for sustainable development that will enter a concluding student competition. In this school project, the project team offers a selection of up-to-date authentic teaching materials on US-American culture and the issue of sustainable development in the 21st century. The project has an open design that allows for flexible implementation in the classroom per local state and school curricula, time budgets, teaching and learning practices, and technological infrastructures. However, several core principles of teaching and learning are emphasised in this project. Task cycles and materials in the Going Green project were designed following a task-based, integrated-skills approach to foreign language instruction; they provide a guided introduction to computer-assisted language learning to teachers with little e-learning experience. They also open an avenue to fostering intercultural communicative competence.
