Beschreibung des Datensatzes | The dataset is a collection of school contributions delineating the Going Green Sustainability Action Plans, spanning a period of nine years - from the school year 2014 to 2023. The Going Green Sustainability Action Plans is a school competition organized and supervised by the Going Green steering committee. The dataset encompasses a diverse range of competition projects submitted by more than 90 participating classes, showcasing their innovative ideas, strategies, and implementation processes aimed at fostering sustainability within their schools, communities and neighborhoods. These contributions collectively capture the creative and intellectual outputs generated by students and teachers alike during the competition. Each school project within the dataset is accompanied by an abstract text providing a comprehensive overview of the project's goal, methodology, and implementation process. These abstracts serve as succint summaries, offering valuable insights into the specific objectives, strategies and learning outcomes of each sustainability action plan. The dataset serves as a crucial resource for teachers, educators, researchers as well as sustainability practitioners interested in studying and understanding the multifaceted aspects of sustainability within educational contexts. |

Forschungsdesign | This school project is a Moodle-based blended learning initiative designed for secondary English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) classrooms in the United States and Germany. The main objective is to engage and connect German and U.S. learners, fostering exploration of environmental challenges and policies within their respective countries. Furthermore, students will collaboratively develop and implement local action plans aimed at promoting sustainability. These student projects will be an integral part of a concluding school competition. The course design incorporates three key pedagogical principles. Firstly, it adopts the task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach, structuring the curriculum around product-oriented and meaning-focused task cycles that mirror real-world communication. Additionally, content and language instruction are integrated within a modular project structure, where exercises for language practice complement content and inquiry-based task cycles. By adhering to these principles, the project ensures a focus on content learning and promotes cooperative learning through shared ideas, expertise and action plans. The project also presents a selection of contemporary, authentic teaching materials, offering insights into US-American culture and sustainability in the 21st century. The lessons and activities are aligned with the "Next Generation Science Standards" and the "College, Career & Civic Life" (C3) frameworks for inclusion in German and U.S. course curricula. The design of the project is also open, providing the flexibility to adapt it according to time constraints, teaching and learning practices, and school's technological infrastructure. Going Green activities are designed to follow a task-based, integrated skills approach and computer-assisted language learning. The learning materials emphasize meaningful communication rather than focus on isolated linguistic structures. Additionally, the project aims to nurture intercultural communicative competence, encouraging students to critically evaluate authentic texts and local case studies to gain an "insider's perspective" into the target culture. |
