Abstract

With this thesis, I pursue the study of temporality to understand researchers' transformative experiences in social-ecological research projects. First, I explore temporal complexities in relation to academic projects, social ecology, and transformation literature. Next, I develop an interview methodology to investigate project researchers' experiences. The interview results suggest frequent temporal tension through social and ecological environments, as well as academic pressures, while also showing moments of transformative learning. In the discussion chapter, I examine how transformation arises through social relations, and how this is complicated by temporal-contextual factors. This leads me to consider the way that scarcity of time and academic labor precarity affect transformation in research, and how we can exercise temporal agency within these conditions.
