Abstract

The article explores the biographies of Pavel Antik, Anna Antik andAleksandr Kvartirov (Alexander Kwartiroff), and the history of theirfilm company Neptun founded soon after the February revolutionin 1917. Operating in the very last years of the imperial film indus-try, Neptun engaged many of the prominent creative figures of thetime and produced three films starring the poet VladimirMayakovsky. After emigrating to Berlin, the Antik-Kwartiroff familybriefly revived Neptun and produced Paul Leni’s celebrated expres-sionist film Waxworks (1924). The article reconstructs the company’shistory through previously unknown biographical facts and unpub-lished photos from the archive of the family’s descendants.
