Abstract

This exploratory multiple case study analyzes sustainable business models of 16 sustainability pioneers along the entire smartphone life cycle. The data was collected from multiple sources, including 16 semi-structured interviews with interviewees in key positions in the chosen companies conducted between January and August 2018. To ensure that the informants were knowledgeable about the business model, only managers in strategic positions in their company were interviewed. Face-to-face and video techniques were applied for the interviews which lasted between 30 and 45 min. The interviews were complemented with secondary data (news articles, press releases, company reports) and observation and documentation from the Innovation Lab on Sustainable Smartphones workshops. This data triangulation aims at strengthening the validity of the study by using multiple measures to corroborate the same finding and hence, avoiding single source bias. The data collection process was documented through a research file for each company to increase data reliability.
