Abstract
The article presents findings on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) from the 2025 pilot study MIKS on students’ media and information literacy, conducted at Leuphana University Lüneburg. Based on an online survey with a sample of 446 students, the study examined how AI-based applications are used in academic studies, how students assess their own AI competencies, and what expectations they express toward higher education institutions. The results highlight the importance of systematically integrating the development of AI competencies into curricula as well as into accompanying support services provided by libraries. Despite its limited generalizability, the pilot study offers important impulses for the development of higher education institutions.
