Abstract
The natural environment of Jimma zone as well as its social and political systems have changed considerably over the last two or three decades. For instance, from narratives by local elders, religious leaders, and Abba Gadaa, we know that forest cover, types of crops, agricultural practices, the strength of local traditional organizations and social cohesion, gender relations and girls’ education, as well as the political administration all changed in the last decades. These changes in the landscape also led to changes in the livelihoods of local people. Similarly to how these past natural processes and human interventions influenced the present landscape, processes and interventions in the present will shape the future of the landscape.
