Abstract

The family support system nowadays hardly receives any feedback on the consequences of their decisions regarding the children concerned. The present study shows that the family model experienced as a child has far-reaching effects on their lives when they become adults. Especially alienated children have a considerably lower life satisfaction and poorer health - both psychologically and physically - than children from intact families - but also as children of separated parents. The decisive factor is the children's exposure to parental conflict in the negative sense, as well as aspects such as attachment, contact with primary caregivers, affection, or conflict protection in the positive one. The study also finds an ambivalent role of the family support system - on the one hand without any significant effect, on the other hand a (very) negative perception - as well as an intergenerational effect of the family model experienced in the parental home on one's own life satisfaction and health.
