Abstract

Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the emerging field of corpus sociolinguistics. It begins by sketching basic concepts and approaches in the fields of the parent disciplines of sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics, and by highlighting interfaces and synergies between both the fields. This chapter introduces the reader in a hands-on way to software packages and to online corpora, and equips them with a range of corpus linguistic analytical tools which will be used throughout this book. This chapter closes with a critical discussion of the limitations and challenges of corpus sociolinguistics and with an overview of the organisation of this book.
